The Institute of Materials' Prain Medal and Prize has been awarded to Mr Derek E. Tyler, vice-president for Olin Brass and head of the Metals Research Laboratories (MRL) in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. The award, which is sponsored by the Copper Development Association, was presented at a recent dinner held in London at the Institute of Materials.

Through unusual technical acumen and forceful dedication to the advancement of the research and development goals of his organisation, Olin Brass, Derek Tyler has been one of the world's major contributors to the advancement of copper and copper alloy technology over the past three decades. Under his leadership significant improvements in manufacturing processes have been implemented and a number of high-performance copper alloys have been developed uniquely tailored to meet specific end-use requirements in both time-honoured and emerging application areas. Many of these accomplishments are recorded in his more than 100 issued US patents and published scientific papers.
