Willenhall West Midlands firm B.E. Wedge reports that it recently won a contract to galvanize a national football stadium on one of the harshest landscapes in the north.
The Faroe Islands (population 44,262) are 150 miles from the Shetlands and 300 miles from Iceland and spend three months of the year in virtual darkness.
However, they are keen soccer fans – and even managed a draw with Scotland where their goalkeeper famously wore a bobble hat!
Now B.E. Wedge has been awarded the contract to hot dip galvanize 4,000 seats for the national stadium at Itrottarfelag. Malcolm Wright, Specialist Division director and general manager, said, "We have galvanized seats for a number of clubs in the past, but never for a club as remote as this one.
"We were very surprised to hear from the Faroe Islands – to be honest, I think a few of us here had to look at the map to find out exactly where they were. It is quite a feather in our caps to be able to boast that we have galvanized seats for a national stadium. If the people behind the new Wembley Stadium want some work doing for them, they know where to come!"
The seats are galvanized at the Willenhall plant before being sent to another plant for a plastic coating to be added.
"When you get an order for work you are always more than pleased to accept it", added Malcolm, "but when you get one that is destined for somewhere like the Faroes, it is just that little bit more special."
