High running costs of measuring water levels in corrosive gases are said to be set to become a thing of the past following the launch of a new corrosive gas trace moisture analyser from single source filtration.
The new analyser (Plate 5), recently launched in the UK at the 2000 London International Chlorine Symposium run by the Society of Chemical Industry, is designed to measure trace water levels in all gases, but its novel design is thought to offer significant savings in running costs over traditional analysers in corrosive gases.

The nature of corrosive gases like chlorine and HCl is such that the water the analyser is trying to measure reacts with the gas to corrode the sensor. The sensor then has to be regularly replaced or repaired.
According to SSF no longer does the analyser have to be sent back to the manufacturer for repair because the new TMA analyser design enables complete on-site regeneration of the sensor. The simple operation is carried out by the user, is said to take no more than 20 minutes and costs around £100 annually. In this way the sensor is thought to have a practically endless operational life.
Manufactured by CMC Instruments GmbH the TMA analyser will reportedly continuously measure moisture levels between 1 and 2,500 ppm, and is very stable with accuracy to within 1 per cent. It also claims a very fast response time, which is important when measuring low ppm levels.
The analyser comes in a complete range of designs including desktop, rack mounted and fully portable, all with various output and alarm options. The sensor itself is available in a wide variety of different materials to suit different gases and can operate under any pressure or indeed vacuum.
Keith Batters of Maidstone based distributors Single Source Filtration explains: "We are very pleased to be able to bring this analyser to UK operations". He continues, "Companies on the Continent have been using the analyser for some time but until now it hasn't been available in the UK.
"As well as the clear cost savings, there are real benefits in terms of increased reliability and reduced maintenance time to consider."
