In GB Patent 2340 131 Ford Motor Co. Ltd describes a steel article that has at least a part of its surface plated with a corrosion resistant coating layer. It comprises at least 90 per cent zinc, at least one divalent metal selected from the iron group comprising nickel, cobalt, and iron, at least one trivalent or higher-valent metal and at least one colloidal inorganic material (e.g. silica, alumina or ferric oxide). The invention also provides a process for manufacturing a corrosion resistant steel article by electroplating, using specified concentrations of the respective ingredients. A layer of paint may be electrodeposited on the coating layer without applying a conversion coating to the coating layer.
