A new performance coating has been introduced by one of the country's specialists in the field which, it is claimed, opens up new opportunities for manufacturers requiring a combination of highly flexible protection and dry,permanent lubrication. Flurene 212, available from E/M Coatings Ltd, is said to have already proven to be of significant benefit to manufacturers of rubber and polymer products – notably O rings and seals – as well as customers requiring food-safe coatings.
Importantly, it reportedly also requires a relatively low curing temperature of just 80°C rather than the normally expected level for this type of protection of perhaps 150°C to 200°C. General manager, Barry Woodall,draws attention to the significance of this feature: "The low temperature lends itself, naturally, to materials such as plastics and rubber, whereas,previously, industry had to accept that specialist chemicals able to withstand higher curing temperatures were relatively more expensive. In these terms alone this is a significant breakthrough, which clearly opens up new opportunities across industry.
"Designers and manufacturers alike will instantly recognise the benefits which arise in particular from the low friction properties of Flurene 212. Moreover, because it is water-dilutable, its application is extremely environmentally friendly."
The coating reportedly achieves a film thickness of between 10 and 25 microns and can be supplied in virtually any colour to meet the customer's specification. Applied by conventional spray techniques, it can be easily and readily washed down with water during its lifetime – of direct relevance to food-safe applications.
