Environmental Simulation; Weathering of Materials

Besides climatic factors such as temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, sun radiation and wind velocity, pollution gases decisively influence atmospheric corrosion and ageing of materials.

Although these effects can be observed under real conditions, environmental simulation is increasingly used as a method of investigation. Here, under controllable conditions, influences and action pathways are simulated in a system model in order to transfer the information obtained to real events.

The guideline VDI 3958 Part 10 describes the general simulation procedures for investigations in materials without significant influence of sun radiation on ageing and service life of an object which is not exposed to sunlight, as well as procedures for investigations with significant influence of sunlight on objects, e.g. polymers.

The procedures presented in the guideline enable recommendations on the basis of comparisons for the selection of materials or products in view of the resistance to corrosion and ageing.

The publication is released in German.
