Worksop Galvanizing informs us that it has set a new throughput record for its plant in Claylands Avenue.
Working around the clock, operatives have hot dip galvanized a total of 825 tonnes of structural steel and other parts over a seven-day production period– a tonnage equal to the weight of about 85 double-decker buses!
This follows the installation, early last year, of a new 21 metre galvanizing bath – thought to be the longest in the UK – and the core piece of equipment in the hot dip galvanizing process.
"The achievement is down to the new bath, and the increased scope which it gives, and to the efforts of all the team here", said Sean Kay, director and general manager at Worksop.
Worksop's bath holds 600 tonnes of molten zinc heated to 450°C into which steel is dipped to receive an overall anti-corrosion protective coating. It means that, for the first time, customers can have work of up to 20.75 metres galvanized in one single immersion – something often specified by architects or up to 29 metres by double dipping, depending on section lengths.
Recent consignments through the bath have included fabricated rolled steel joists for West Ham United's new stand at Upton Park – large and intricately shaped items which need specialised handling techniques.
These, and work done at Worksop for other football grounds, have a special significance: Sean is a former midfield player with Sheffield United FC, and Production Manager Martin Hardy was a professional at Notts County.
