Keywords: USF Open Blast, Blasting
All the key benefits of automatically blast cleaning small components, without the use of compressed air, are reported to be now available to a wide market following the launch by USF Surface Preparation of the Tornado drum blast cabinet (Plate 3).
Said to be competitively priced and with a very small footprint, the Tornado will fit into even the smallest workshop. Components are loaded into the units'rotating mesh drum with the cleaning power being achieved by twin electric drive motors and abrasive throwing wheels which impact media onto the surface of the loaded components.

According to USF the tumbling action of the drum means that all surfaces are presented to the blast stream, providing uniform cleaning and finishing in one pass.
The blast media falls back into the sump and is recycled. The manufactures explain that an efficient, integral dust collector removes broken down media, corrosion and dirt ensuring that only clean abrasive is recycled. The dust is held in a dust container to be emptied as necessary.
The Tornado is said to be designed for use with most types of blast media and will handle a wide range of small components and castings such as valve bodies, brake shoes, springs, and auto-components. Standard features include: a full width top-access door for easy loading and unloading; timer for automatic operation; thermal overload switches and a door interlock switch for maximum operator safety.
