Dewmeter added to climatic group of products
Keywords: Coatings, Climate
Monitoring the climatic conditions that prevail when a coating is being applied is vital to ensure that the coating is applied correctly and will achieve its expected life. Coatings that are applied on undetected moisture can lead to poor adhesion and premature coating failures causing costly remedial work.
Elcometer Instruments Ltd., the Manchester based specialist in hand-held gauges for coating quality control, have added a new and powerful Dewmeter to the climatic group of products, the Elcometer 319.
The Elcometer 319 measures relative humidity ( per centRH), ambient (air)temperature and surface temperature. It calculates the dewpoint temperature and the difference between the dewpoint temperature and the surface temperature(AT). All these values can be displayed at the touch of a button but the new Elcometer 319 is said to offer memory capacity for storing up to 99 Datasets, with their date and time (Plates 4 and 5).

Each Dataset comprises the per cent RH, Air, Surface, Dewpoint Temperatures and the AT value. These Datasets can be reviewed on the display, printed via an Infrared port to an optional IR printer or be uploaded to a PC for analysis, printing, charting or archiving.
Packed with features, the Elcometer 319 is described as a rugged and light-weight gauge suitable for field use, allowing quick and accurate decision making about the conditions under which a coating job is to be carried out.
Features claimed, include:
Temperature measurements in either degrees Celsius or degrees Fahrenheit
Backlight for display in low light conditions
Measurement mode for direct measurement of climatic conditions
Memory mode for storage of Datasets
Simple keyboard for ease of use; five dual-function buttons for on, off, hold and left and right arrows for menu navigation.
Optional Calibration Check Standards for field checking humidity calibration
Optional Communications Kit for linking to a PC includes EDTS+, Elcometer Data Transfer Software Excel Link.
Protective carry-case for storage and transportation
Clock/calendar display for record keeping and printouts
Liquid probe option to replace surface probe for testing coating temperature.
Elcometer also reports that it has introduced new 2-piece coated thickness standards to go along with their existing 4-piece and measured foil thickness standards as accessories for their range of coating thickness gauges.
Coated thickness standards are hard- wearing and convenient for checking the condition of the calibration of coating thickness gauges throughout the life of the gauge. Available with either steel or aluminium substrate materials, the new 2-piece standards have two thickness values together with a separate zero plate, all mounted in a small folder for maximum ease of use.
All the coated standards in the Elcometer range (4-piece and 2-piece versions) are supplied complete with a calibration certificate and with the measured thickness values labelled in both metric (gm) and imperial (mil) units.
Standard thickness value sets are held in stock but specially customised versions are available with either specially selected thickness values using the hard wearing epoxy coatings to duplicate the thickness of the Users coating, or with specially coated substrate materials to more accurately represent the materials being coated.
These coated standards are said to be excellent for the long term monitoring of the condition of a coating thickness gauge particularly when operating to a quality management system such as ISO 9000 where gauge calibration records are defined as part of the gauge management procedure.
