Identifying unknown polymers by LCMS-IT-Tof mass spec
Article Type: Methods From: Anti-Corrosion Methods and Materials, Volume 56, Issue 1
Shimadzu Scientific Instruments has published the technical report,Identification of unknown polymer additives by LCMS-IT-Tof mass spectrometry. Hundreds of polymers are available for thousands of different applications What is not so well-known is that synthetic polymers nearly always require polymer additives to achieve key performance properties. Even one polymer from a single manufacturer can contain different types of additives and blends of additives depending on the grade and intended use. For this reason, identification of the additives used in the polymer material becomes important for adjusting product characteristics with respect to competitors’ products, as well as for improving products within a company’s product line. In this report, a unique method for identifying polymer additives in a fast and easy manner is examined. This technique consists of determining the compositional formula by MSn along with searching a compound database using that composition formula as a keyword.
