Propulsive jets from transversely disposed rows of engines 1 are discharged through spanwise‐extending openings 5 in the undersurfaces of the wings, the jets normally discharging rearwardly but being capable of downward deflexion to provide lift. A tube 6 projects into the nozzle openings 5 and carries tangentially disposed deflector plates 7 which can be moved around the circumference of the tube by a central operating member 10, from the normal approximately horizontal position shown in Fig. 1 (bottom) into a vertical position to divert the jets downwardly. In a second arrangement the engines are mounted in the fuselage and are connected by divergent ducts to the spanwise wing slots.
