Advanced Research and Development Facility: Engineering Problems Associated with the Construction of Some of the Wind Tunnels and Engine Test Cells at the Arnold Engineering Development Centre, Tennessee, U.S.A.

WHEN, at the conclusion of the Second World War, the startling accomplishments of the Germans in terms of aero‐nautical research and development were fully appreciated, steps were taken in the United States to ensure that adequate facilities would be available to maintain a position in the van of progress. To this end construction began in 1950 on the Arnold Engineering Development Centre with the aim of providing laboratories for the testing of aircraft, missiles, space‐vehicles and their propulsion units over a wide range of conditions. The Centre is named after General Arnold who commanded the United States Army Air Forces in World War 11.
