From an article discussing inerlial navigation systems for civil applications published in the January 1964 issue of Aircraft Engineering: ‘The indications are that current inertial navigation systems might cost anything between £15,000 and £50,000 and … some of the airlines are taking the attitude that they are only prepared to invest a sum of this order if there are financial savings elsewhere.’ ‘For example, dispensing with one of the crew.’
