“The Engineer in British Society”: A LECTURE TO THE SOCIETY OF LICENSED AIRCRAFT ENGINEERS AND TECHNOLOGISTS

As the immediate past Chairman of CEI, your President asked me to say something about the engineering profession and about CEI itself. I have chosen the rather pompous title of “The Engineer in British Society Today”, but I hope I will cover the subject in a manner which will be of some interest and at least provoke a little discussion. You will find I make little direct reference to aerospace, because this evening I am concerning myself with the engineer in all his disciplines. Incidentally, when I talk of the engineer or the profession, I am not talking of the Chartered Engineer alone. The Engineering profession includes both Chartered and Technician Engineers, who must work together as a team, each supporting the other. Indeed their functions often overlap and may be interchangeable.
