When Ferranti launched their latest laser rangefinder on to the military market in 1980, few people will have looked beyond the Ferranti label. Yet, beneath its white casing, the Ferranti Type 521 laser range‐finder owes much of its development to the technology of a British company which only two years ago was just an idea.
