Dear reader

It is our pleasure to present the second special issue of the Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology journal, dedicated to the 4th EASN Workshop on Flight Physics and Aircraft Design. The workshop has been hosted by RWTH Aachen University and EASN on October 27-29, 2014.

During the workshop with more than 150 participants, 106 papers were presented. About half of the papers were developed in current projects funded within the scope of the Seventh Framework Program (FP7). In total, scientific results from 30 FP7-projects were presented, thereby, accenting the workshop as a major European dissemination event for new knowledge and emerging aeronautic technologies. Overall, the scope reached from fundamental research on aircraft technologies to air transport system innovation and policy issues. Furthermore, distinguished invited speakers updated the delegates about the newest opportunities for carrying out aeronautics related research on available research infrastructure and novel research results. We would like to cordially thank the invited speakers – Dr Dietrich Knörzer, Professor Rolf Henke, Mr Bruno Mazzetti, Dr Georg Eitelberg, Dr Geza Schrauf and Mr Giuseppe Pagnano for their interesting presentations.

From the numerous contributions to the workshop, a limited number of papers were accepted for publication in the first and this second special issue of the Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology journal after peer review.

The quality of both issues are primarily based on the contributions of all authors, to whom we are grateful for their valuable work. Further, we would like to express our appreciation to the reviewers for their evaluation and suggestions. Finally, thanks are due to Dr Askin T. Isikveren, the Editor-in-Chief of the Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology journal, for his consensus and support in preparing this special issue.

We hope you will find this second special issue interesting reading.
