Backshells facilitate termination of individual screens in a multicore cable

It is reported that the Screen Wrap™ range of backshell adaptors from Fairford-based manufacturer New Chapel Electronics greatly simplifies the task of terminating individual screens in a multicore cable to a connector shell.

Compatible with most currently available circular and rectangular (i.e. ARINC) connectors, the screen-wrap adaptors are used in conjunction with a knitted braid, which is wrapped around the cable bundle in such a way as to ensure contact with each individual cable screen.

We are informed that under comparative tests, this method of termination extends the performance of the screen termination upwards over a frequency range from 30kHz to 300MHz.

We understand that, since the adaptors eliminate the need for solder sleeves and soldering, they save weight and offer much greater resistance to shock and vibration.

Requiring no special installation tools, the screen-wrap adaptors provide a repairable and maintainable termination and can terminate both screened and unscreened cables within the same bundle.

Three strain relief configurations can be specified. For open wire bundles the cable tie or cable clamp styles are ideal, whereas for sealed cable systems the lip boot style is most appropriate. All versions are available in a choice of materials and finishes and can be fitted with 45° or 90° angled adaptors if required.

Designed to satisfy EMC,Tempest and HIRF screen termination criteria, the adaptors are said to be ideal for use on multicore cables in industrial, transportation, automotive, offshore,naval, defence and aerospace applications.
