New paint can withstand 1,000 degrees centigrade

Duralco's new range of paints from Welwyn Garden City based Symonds Cableform are reported to withstand over 1,000°C as well as high humidity and attack from severe corrosive sources.

The paints are formulated from metallic particles and proprietary inorganic substances that chemically bond to metal surfaces. This theoretically provides a proactive layer against heat, saline atmospheres, fuel gas exhaust, corrosive elements and organic solvents. Application is by brushing, spraying or dipping.

Typical uses are in the automotive, aerospace, foundry, engineering metalworking, H&V, marine, electrical, electronics, power generation and chemical processing industries for exhaust systems, jet engines, heat exchangers, burners and other applications where high temperatures and difficult environmental conditions can easily damage metals. There is a choice of three products: aluminium based Duralco 200 which is stated to withstand 1,050°C,to prevent pitting and erosion on ferrous alloys, aluminium and similar alloys;Duralco 230, which reportedly has passed 2,000 hour salt spray tests, is made from specially processed stainless steel platelets to prevent the diffusion of corrosive gases through the coating - it claims a 800°C resistance; and Duralco 254 is a stainless steel based silicone bonded mix to provide protection up to a claimed 980°C on all types of metallic surfaces.
