Brookhouse installs NDT equipment for composite components

Keywords Brookhouse Composites, Ultrasonic, Inspection, Components,Composites

Brookhouse Composites Ltd informs us that it has installed state-of-the-art ultrasonic equipment to allow volumetric inspection of composite components produced at its Darwen factory.

The new equipment, from Meccasonics, employs ultrasonic compression probes, using water coupling in a purpose-built tank, to examine composite carbon fibre components, 10-25mm thick, for the presence of inclusions and for delamination of carbon fibre layers. Online data are provided and every inspection is stored as a C-scan for off-line analysis and for tracking.

In the event of a defect being identified, further examination to establish its nature and size can be carried out using portable Panametrics NDT equipment.

Non-destructive examination is now performed on a wide range of plastic components and eventually the procedure will also be extended to composite tools.

Brookhouse Composites offers expertise in all aspects of composites engineering, from the manufacture and repair of composite components to the design and manufacture of composite moulding tools. It has long experience in the aerospace industry and carries quality certification from all the leading aircraft manufacturers and UK defence organisations. The company is comprehensively approved to carry out repair and maintenance of aircraft components manufactured from composite components for all European airlines under JAR-145. It is the only composite manufacturing company in the UK to have gained the JAR-21 Sub Part G certification, which allows it to manufacture aircraft components, certified for acceptance in all of the 30 countries which form the Joint Aviation Authority.
