Melt-out cores for forming one-piece plastic and rubber parts can reportedly be produced in non-toxic materials with two fusible alloys from Mining and Chemical Products.
Melting at 140°C and 200°C, both alloys are completely devoid of lead and cadmium. The manufacturer says that its formulations not only eliminate toxic traces in the cores themselves but also help lessen toxic presence in the workplace.
Both alloys can be used for casting cores of any size and weight in any volume either automatically or by hand.
With their low viscosity and surface tension, they are said to flow freely throughout the mould to produce an accurate, finely detailed profile of the component interior on solidification.
The core is overmoulded with plastic or composite by either injection moulding machine or hand lay-up. When the overmoulding has stabilized, the core is melted out to leave a homogenous hollow component without any joins or joints.
The recovered alloy can be recirculated continuously, being cast into further cores over prolonged periods with very little wastage.
In addition to fusible alloys, MCP provides equipment for melting dispensing and recovering the metals in fusible-coring applications.
