Industry management consultancy, Bourton Group, has been awarded a major contract to implement self-directed teams (SDTs) in the Defence Aviation Repair Agency (DARA). DARA is undertaking a major change programme following its move to a trading fund, allowing the agency to become a more commercial enterprise capable of securing new business opportunities.

The introduction of SDTs within the 4,000 strong production areas of DARA's workforce is said to be a key element of the programme. Other major changes include behavioural and functional competencies, assessment and development,performance management, and employee relations, including partnership with trade unions.

A typical learning family consists of 15 teams and their managers –about 200 people in all. All members share common processes, products and customers and have shared goals.
