In2ViewHT automatic hardness testing systems

Keywords: Mitutoyo, Hardness testing

Mitutoyo's new range of In2ViewHT automatic hardness testers (see Plate 7) is said to be designed to perform consistently every day and eliminate the risk of detection errors being introduced between different shift operators. The products also feature the new MicroLite system that reportedly allows the testers' illuminators to be controlled within a tolerance of 1,000th of the control range. When integrated with the detection software it will permit automatic detection of the background illumination level, and reset the illuminator accordingly.

According to Mitutoyo, the image analysis detection system will sense changes in sample reflectivity and adjust as required during operation; when changing from one material to another or one phase to another, the system will adjust the illuminator to overcome the risk of the wrong measurements being taken. When this feature is matched with the correct optics and camera, operator error is said to be effectively eliminated, providing confidence that the readings taken are consistent.

Three different types of In2ViewHT systems have been developed, "measure only", "semi automatic" and "fully automatic". The measure only system functions like a video system with automatic measurement and reporting available. The semi-automatic system is where the sample is moved on an automatic stage so that the operator can walk away from the machine while it completes the indentation process for any number of traverses.

The fully-automatic system, where the operator simply indicates the start position and returns to it when the process is finished, ensures that measurements are reliable and the positions of each indentation are precise. Reports are then ready to print or export.

Up to 95 per cent savings in operator time are achievable when taken over a two year period, resulting in a payback time of just 12 months.
