A new industry report that examines the financial performance of leading companies operating in the aerospace industry in Great Britain reveals the top ten most profitable companies by pre-tax profit margin for the last complete financial year available, 1999/ 2000 (Table I).

Led by Page Aerospace, which has an impressive profit margin of 31.7 per cent, (almost four times that of the industry average of 8.3 per cent) the sales turnover for the companies included in the top ten varies from £7 million to £55.9 million. Note: GKN Westland Aerospace (Avonmouth) Ltd, Bombardier Aerospace Europe Ltd and Airwork Ltd have been excluded from the "top ten" due to exceptional profit items in the year of analysis.
The Business Ratio report, entitled 'The Aerospace Industry and published by The Prospect Shop, analyses and compares the financial performance of 147 leading companies operating in the optical industry in Great Britain. Covering the last full three accounting years available, (1997/98 to 1999/ 2000) the report provides individual company performance, sub-sector performance(engineering and manufacturing, support services, fittings and safety equipment,airframe manufacturers) in addition to performance averages for the industry as a whole.
Overall industry performance encouraging
The report reveals that during the three-year period under review, the average company examined in the report has seen total sales increase by a healthy 21.2 per cent to an average £38.3 million whilst total pre-tax profits have increased by 28 per cent to an average £3.2 million. Profitability ratios have risen over the period, whilst efficiency ratios have climbed and gearing levels have improved. The report concludes that, the future looks promising for leading companies in the aerospace industry with increasing sales and higher profit levels.
The average pre-tax profit margin figure for the industry has increased slightly during the three- year period, rising from 7.9 per cent at the start of the period to 8.3 per cent at the end of the period, 199912000. When comparing sub-sector performance, "fittings and safety equipment" has the highest pre-tax profit margin result for 1999/2000, at 9.4 per cent The "airframe manufacturers"sub-sector performed the worst, with a margin of just.4.5 per cent (Table II).
