Keywords: Engineering and Technology Board, UK

The first chairman of the UK's new Engineering and Technology Board is to be Sir Peter Williams, currently Master of St Catherine's College Oxford, chairman of The National Museum of Science and Industry, and director of CKN plc, president of the Institute of Physics, and former chairman of Oxford Instruments plc.

The ETB, which started work formally at the beginning of this year, has been set up to address the needs of the UK's engineering and technology community. It is based on extensive preparatory work undertaken by the Hawley Croup and an fc'l'B "Shadow Board". It will take over and expand the role of the present Engineering Council, which has only dealt with issues relating to the engineering profession.

High on the ETB's list of priorities will be tackling concerns about future skills shortages- promoting the importance and attractiveness of engineering and technology based careers; and championing the needs of the rapidly growing technology-sector.
