EMI and RFI seals for Eurofighter Typhoon
Keywords: Aircraft, Military, Equipment
Dunlop Aerospace Precision-Rubber is to supply electromagnetic shielding seals for various applications in the European Fighter Aircraft.
The seals are used both in the fuselage and wings. Apart from the usual sealing functions the Dunlop seals will help to protect the aircraft’s electronic equipment against electro-magnetic and radio frequency interference(EMI and RFI) (Plate 15).
Plate 15 Dunlop Aerospace Precision Rubber seals provide shielding for Eurofighter Typhoon from EMI and RFI interference
The Eurofighter Typhoon seals are derived from Dunlop Aerospace Precision Rubber’s EMC product family, which incorporates electrically conductive materials specially developed for sealing enclosures and structures in both civil and military aircraft. These silicone and fluorosilicone-based materials incorporate various fillers such as silver, silverplated aluminium,silver-plated copper and carbon and are capable of conducting currents up to many kilo amps.
Dunlop EMC seals can operate at temperatures from - 60°C to +250°C,giving field 1 attenuation up to 100 dB at frequencies from 100 MHz to 18 GHz. Typically, they offer volume resistivity of less than 0.1 Ohm cm and some can also be used for lightning strike protection. The EFA seals are a flattened d-section with a number of inserts, holes and slots to accommodate the fixings, but the technology can be applied to all seal types, including flat tapes, gaskets, inflatable and fire-barrier seals. Dunlop Aerospace Precision Rubber can also incorporate metallized fabrics into the products to enhance properties.
