Bombardier Enhanced Vision System on the Bombardier Global Express XRS

Keywords: Jet aircraft, Aircraft components

Innotech Aviation has completed its first activation of a Bombardier Enhanced Vision System (BEVS) on a Bombardier Global Express XRS ultra long-range business jet, thus becoming one of the first facilities in the world to perform this innovative system installation.

The full system activation on the aircraft's Thales head-Up Flight Display(HFDS) took place at the company's technical service headquarters at Montreal's Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport.

Bombardier has obtained full certification of its BEVS system from Transport Canada, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the European Aviation Safety Agency. The system is a standard feature on the new ultra long-range Global Express XRS aircraft, is available as an option on the high-speed Bombardier Global 5000 jet and as a retrofit for Global Express aircraft currently in service.

Developed in co-operation with Thales, the overall HFDS and EFVS integrator, and CMC Electronics, which supplies the SureSight l-Series InfraRed camera, BEVS provides improved situational awareness in difficult operating conditions, often at unfamiliar airports. It also helps to minimize the risk of runway incursions at night and during low visibility conditions.

In accordance with recent FAA rule changes to enhanced vision flight systems,BEVS allows aircraft to fly straight-in approaches down to a decision altitude of 100 feet (30.48 m) Height Above Threshold (HAT). Operators of Canadian registered aircraft are able to apply for an exemption from current rules;effectively granting them the same level of operational benefits afforded FAA registered aircraft. Until EASA introduces new regulations on EFVS, pilots of BEVS equipped aircraft will only be able to use the system for situational awareness when operating in that jurisdiction.
