Screwfit adapter system for precision boring tools

Keywords: Precision engineering, Aircraft engines

A new range of 20-70 mm diameter precision boring heads able to machine up to six times diameter, and for use with the highly-precise and stable Walter ScrewFit modular adaptor system, has been announced by Walter GB of Redditch(Plate 3).

Plate 3Walter GB's new boring heads utilise the ScrewFit modular adapter system

Available as twin-flute boring and single-flute with precision adjustment for micron-accuracy machining, the new versions are integrated in terms of diameter and length, to enable users to mix-and-match for combined boring and precision boring tasks.

Heads above 33mm diameter feature an automatic imbalance compensation feature– a displaced weight ensures even weight distribution.

The benefits claimed of the new range include:

  • The ScrewFit adaptor reduces tool projection by around 30 per cent, thus reducing vibration and achieving higher dimension and concentricity tolerances. Also, ScrewFit tools require only a fork wrench for mounting.

  • Imbalance compensation not only eliminates the need to transfer tools to a balancing machine, but it also allows tools to run at approx 2,000m/min (about 33 per cent higher than non-balanced types) with resulting shorter machining times as well as the capability of using CBN and PCD cutting materials.

Walter's smaller diameter (2-45 mm) precision boring head range has also been extended to include manually- balanced types. These are fitted with exchangeable boring bars for depths from 9 mm (with a 2 mm machining diameter) up to 120 mm.
