A German Long‐Range Aeroplane: The 960 Horse‐Power Four‐Engined Heinkel Mail‐Carrying Machine

GERMANY has recently shown signs of following the general trend towards the adoption of the lour engined arrangement on all but the smaller transport aeroplanes. The Heinkel He‐116 is one of the latest examples to be flown. Although a four‐engined aeroplane this machine falls into the category of a medium powered type, as it is equipped with Hirth 508‐B engines of only 240 h.p. each. Despite this comparatively low power the He‐116 carries a crew of four, 1,214 lbs. of mail and enough petrol for a range of 2,800 miles at a cruising speed of 186 m.p.h. Heinkel monoplanes have long been characterized by their slim fuselages and eliptical icings, and in these respects the He‐116 maintains the tradition to perfection.
