Cementation is a method of coating the surface of one metallic material with another metal, by which the material to be coated is surrounded with the coating material in powdered form, and the vapour of the coating metal is diffused into the other material. Within this definition come the carburizing process, the nitriding process, etc., but it is a question whether cementation can be effected perfectly when the vapour pressure of the material to be coated is far greater than that of the coating metal, as in the case of applying molybdenum to nickel.
