THE work described in these two reports is entirely experimental and comprises a detailed investigation into the effect of size and width of panel, edge conditions, grain of material, and initial imperfections on the behaviour of curved panels under axial compression. Owing to the large number of variables, an extensive series of tests was inevitable, if useful results were to be obtained, and at the start of the work considerable trouble was taken to devise apparatus that would combine reliability of test results with rapidity of testing.
