AS we write, industrial—to say nothing of office and domestic—life in England is largely at a standstill, or at any rate considerably dislocated, owing to the surprising failure of our rulers to read the portents which have for months been pointing to a serious shortage of fuel at this season; as a result of which (we write chiefly for the information of our overseas readers) the production of this issue of AIRCRAFT ENGINEERING will be considerably delayed and it is quite impossible at this moment to forecast when it may appear. For though the daily Press is considered ‘essential’, no one in political circles has been hardy enough to suggest that it is of any import when monthly publications, even of a serious technical nature, should be published. So that as far as we are concerned we come under a ban which prohibits any electricity being employed on our production so long as the present ‘crisis’ lasts and the drastic repressive regulations are in force. All we can foretell with any confidence is that this issue is sure to be delayed in greater or less degree; for which readers must acquit us of any responsibility. Our part has been completed and the rest is in the hands of politicians and bureaucrats who seem to be inextricably engulfed in a course of events which they have shown themselves lamentably unable either to foresee or to control. We can only promise to use every effort to bring out our March issue to time.
