A STRUCTURE is, or at least should be, the result of purposive design. It is there‐fore rational and the principles of its functioning should be apparent after a little study. Its purpose is to carry certain types of load and its ‘appreciation’ consists in unravelling all the various ways in which it can achieve its purpose.
