IN this issue we publish a translation (by MR TIBOR HAAS, whom readers will remember as the author of the paper ‘Fatigue Tests and Aircraft Life Evaluation’ in our October 1955 issue) of a paper by a distinguished German specialist in the study of fatigue. DR ING. E. GASSNER. We feel that this is a contribution of considerable importance, backed as it is by nearly twenty years of experimental and analytical experience of fatigue problems. Sonic of the points have been voiced before in this country, but this paper brings together the reasons which have made fatigue such a serious factor of ignorance in aircraft design since the war.
