The need to measure accurately the rate at which wire is being fed to a given point exists in a number of processes. A particular case is that of consumable electrode welding where the electrode wire is fed from a spool into the weld zone and the rate of feed has a critical influence upon the quality of the joint produced. The usual method of determining wire feed speed is by direct tachometer reference to the speed of the drive rolls but this is susceptible to inaccuracy as the result of wire slip.
