A Selection of Equipment of Use in the Production and Maintenance of Aircraft, Missiles, Space Vehicles and their Components. The principle of this process is based on the ability of rapidly‐discharged electrical energy to create a high intensity magnetic field which interacts with a current field induced in the adjacent subject. A bank of capaci‐tors is charged and the stored energy discharged through a coil as a very high single‐pulsed current. The peak current can be in the order of 90,000 amps, and the pulse duration in the region of twelve micro‐seconds. During this period a magnetic field of a density of up to 300,000 gauss is induced around the subject which in turn opposes field penetration by virtue of its own induced eddy currents. The resulting interaction causes rapid repulsion between the subject and the coil. The coil, being of stronger construction than the subject, is able to withstand the pressure which is often as high as 50,000 p.s.i. and the subject collapses. The applications for this forming process are practically unlimited. By using interchangeable coils expansion, compression and flat forming may be accomplished quickly, simply and accurately.
