WHEN the Hawker Siddeley Nimrod MR Mk. 1 — the world's first land‐based turbofan maritime reconnaissance aircraft — enters service during the latter part of 1969, its primary role will by the location and destruction of enemy submarines. Sonobuoys are one of the principal devices used to locate submarines and these will be dropped from the Nimrod by a computer‐controlled, discharge system which is akin to the traditional Western six‐shooter.
