Underwater Recovery of Flight Data Recorders: A discussion of the requirements and the value of underwater recovery systems

RECORDS of aircraft accidents taken over the ten year period ending December 1969, indicate that outside of communist countries, 79 aircraft of all types, have crashed into water with the loss of 2,097 lives. Up to the present time in 1970, a further six accidents have occurred over water with the loss of 206 lives.
