THE US GOVERNMENT, a few years ago, conducted an inquiry into current research projects to find the date of the original periodical article or scientific paper from which the basic idea of the research originated. In a majority of cases, the original thought was at least 50 years old. So when embarking on a search for information, it is as well to bear in mind that it may refer back, if not 50 years, at any rate further than at first expected.
