During 1979, 19 western built jet airliners were destroyed or damaged beyond economical repair. The total value of these aircraft amount to approximately $210 million which represented a considerable increase on 1978 and follows the upward trend established in recent years. In addition, substantial partial losses accounted for $54 million including accidents to three Boeing 747s amounting to $30 million of this total. The total number of passenger fatalities rose from 663 to 880 and of crew members from 54 to 92.
