Approved for worldwide implementation and scheduled to supplant the Instrument Landing System (ILS) by 1995, the Microwave Landing System (MLS) is a precision approach aid that overcomes the basic limitations of its predecessor by using frequencies in the 5000MHz range instead of the very low values employed in the ILS. Designed for unattended operation, MLS can easily be installed on oil rigs, at heliports and in other confined areas where it was not possible to have the previous system.
