Aircraft undercarriage design involves the application and dissipation of energy within all the various mechanisms making up the complete gear. The functions of landing, taxying, retraction, lowering, steering and braking must be optimised such that each participating component plays its part in the processes. The gear must also be able to deal with emergencies such as rejected take‐off and the very high loads involved.
