Endurance and Fuel Consumption: A Suggestion for the Reduction of Engine Weight by Lowering Compression Ratios

ONE has become so accustomed to having the importance of high thermal efficiency and low fuel consumption stressed and to having impressed on one the consequent desirability of high compression ratio, that there is some danger of one's outlook on the subject becoming rather one‐sided. It may be of some value, therefore, to consider under what circumstances the fuel consumption of an engine is likely to be relatively unimportant.
