Purpose

The aim of this study is to identify gaps in the literature and suggest new research topics. The consumption of non-renewable energy resources and the resulting environmental pollution constitute a global problem that also affects the transport sector. Considering the diminishing resources and greenhouse gas emissions, the industry has shown a trend towards the use of electric vehicles (EVs) in the transport sector. In this study, the capacity of phase change materials (PCMs) in battery thermal management systems (BTMS) to prevent heat-induced degradation in battery systems, which are the energy source of hybrids and EVs, is examined.

Design/methodology/approach

The potential of PCMs was investigated by analysing battery thermal management experiments with the objective of extending the service life of batteries, reducing weight, reducing maintenance requirements and developing system designs to prevent thermal runaway reactions in batteries.

Findings

In this literature review, PCMs were found to be useful in the cooling process in BTMS.

Practical implications

The use of PCMs in battery cooling systems has been evaluated as a promising material because of the benefits of reduced cooling system complexity, reduced maintenance cost and extended use of PCMs without degradation in charge–discharge cycles.

Originality/value

PCMs can be used in cooling systems to reduce the temperature difference between battery packs.
