A new brochure which promotes Corning's Macor® machinable glass ceramic as a problem solving material with the benefits of a technical ceramic and the flexibility of high performance plastics, has been issued by Corning International.
Macor® is a white,odourless material, porcelain-like in appearance, containing approximately 55 per cent fluorophlogopite mica and 45 per cent borosilicate glass. Suitable for high precision machining and the production of complicated forms and shapes,tolerances of ±0.013mm can be achieved with surface finishes of <0.5µm,polished to 0.13µm.
Macor®offers excellent design flexibility and claims to be cost effective both in prototype and production quantities. It can be used at high temperatures, is a useful high temperature isolator and has a low thermal conducitvity. It is also an excellent electrical insulator, has no porosity and when properly baked out will not outgas. Applications have already been found in the electronic/semiconductor,laser, high vacuum, aerospace and nuclear industries.
The new, eight page,brochure contains detailed technical data on the material's thermal, electrical,mechanical and chemical properties together with laboratory test results on such characteristics as thermal expansion and conductivity, rupture, its dielectric constant and resistivity. It also includes machining recommendations such as drilling and turning speed and feed rates, as well as advice on sawing, tapping,grinding and polishing.
