Avrotec Aircraft Services,British Aerospace Regional Aircraft's maintenance and refurbishment arm at Woodford, England, has commenced an upgrade programme of modification work on Lufthansa CityLine's 18 strong Avro R J85 fleet to bring the aircraft up to current production standard. The package includes installation of the Collins GNLS-910 flight management system, a Normalair-Garrett digital autopressurisation system and modification to the communications suite to provide 8.33kHz channel spacing. These modifications meet future European navigation requirements as well as providing a 35,000ft cruise altitude capability.
With test flying and certification as part of the programme for the first aircraft, a four week downtime was scheduled. In fact the modification programme was completed three days early. The remainder of the fleet is now undergoing the upgrade programme,which also incorporates a scheduled C check, on a two week rolling basis through to May 1999. Avrotec is contracted to carry out base maintenance at its Woodford facilities for the Lufthansa CityLine fleet beyond the year 2000.
