Sir Michael new DG for IMechE

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is pleased to announce the appointment of Sir Michael Moore, KBE LVO as its new director general from 1 October 1998.

Sir Michael, 56, was chief of staff to the Naval Allied Commander Southern Europe where he managed the NATO Adriatic Embargo. He left the Navy in January 1998 with the rank of vice admiral.

The Institution's president, Professor John Spence, welcomed Sir Michael's appointment, He said"Sir Michael has spent a lifetime working with engineers and his wide management experience will ensure that the Institution of Mechanical Engineers will take forward the initiatives from its strategic review in a way that will bring benefit to the Institution and its members".

Sir Michael has had a long and distinguished Naval career and has commanded a number of ships and a frigate squadron. He spent two years as executive officer of the Royal Yacht Britannia. He graduated from the Royal Naval College Dartmouth in 1962 and his recent shore appointments include Director of Naval Warfare in the Ministry of Defence and Maritime Advisor to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe in Belgium. He was involved in the implementation of NATO's strategic review which took place as a result of the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the changing European political landscape.

A fluent Swedish speaker,Sir Michael is a Fellow of the Swedish Royal Society of Naval Sciences and a Younger Brother of Trinity House. He was knighted in 1997.
