A comprehensive book edited by engineering staff at the University of Derby has been published detailing state-of-the-art research in manufacturing, engineering, systems and management.

Advances in Manufacturing Technology XII has been edited by Professor Ray Baines,Dean of the University's School of Engineering, together with Professor Azzelarabe Taleb-Bendiab and Dr Zhengxu Zhao. It is published by Professional Engineering Publishing Limited.

The book contains the papers presented by academics from a range of UK universities at the three-day National Conference on Manufacturing Research (NCMR) which was held at the University of Derby from Monday 7 to Wednesday 9 September. The conference attracted around 120 delegates from 46 universities.

The papers represent new knowledge, new ideas and new thinking which is set to inform practice and training across a range of manufacturing activities: manufacturing technology;manufacturing systems; production and inventory control; process planning and scheduling; virtual reality; robots, automation and CAD; modelling and simulation; manufacturing strategy/management; business process re-engineering;design management; knowledge-based systems; quality control management.

The following titles are among the papers highlighted in the book:

  • A tool design methodology for precision forging.

  • An integrated approach to assembly line design.

  • Efficient planning and control in small manufacturing firms using white board systems.

  • A case for improving the industrial measurement of schedule adherence.

  • Management of complex virtual manufacturing environments for manufacturing applications.

  • Development of a methodology to support a robotic assembly cell.

  • Rapid data collection in the simulation of manufacturing systems.

  • Organization culture for world class manufacturing.

  • The arena of core competence in manufacturing effectiveness.

  • Web-based design tools.

  • Integration of machining analysis with knowledge-based design.

  • Analyzing quality data to facilitate continuous improvement.
