Interlux, the lighting controls specialist, has supplied new custom design louvres for the Honeywell Avionic workshops in Basingstoke where the company makes and repairs instruments and electronics for aircraft, including the new Boeing 777.
The project involved the supply of 400 1,200mm × 600mm four-lamp louvres to be fitted in the workshop areas, replacing old prismatic panels with VDU compatible louvres which give a higher standard of lighting control.
Honeywell Avionics specified that the lighting level at the workbenches had to be as close to 1,000 lux as possible and Interlux worked with the company to design and make louvres which met this and other requirements of the workshop area.
Derek Login, operations manager for the Basingstoke facility, said: "The increased use of VDUs on the shopfloor meant that we needed to install louvres which met the Category 2 standard.
"Interlux provided the perfect solution to our needs, replacing the existing prismatic panels with custom designed aluminium louvres which gave a much improved control of light to the working surfaces.
"When working with technology which requires a high degree of intricate workmanship, excellent lighting is a necessity. People in the workshop have noticed a marked improvement in the quality of lighting since the louvres were fitted.
"The project has been extremely successful, reducing maintenance and improving worker comfort", he said. Honeywell Avionics is now considering the Interlux retrofit system for other areas of the operation.
