Three-phase brushless motor drive

Keywords DDC,Drives

DDC has announced a high-performance, three-phase motor drive module for use with 270 volt brushless dc motors in servo current and torque loop control systems. The PW-82351 provides the interface between the power stage and the control electronics and can be used with either analog or digital servo control systems.

The 50 Amp PW-82351 is said to be ideal for aerospace applications, including those found in primary/secondary aircraft flight control trim surfaces, hydraulic pumps, fan motors, and thrust vector control systems.

The drive has six dual-function logic-control inputs which allow the user to select external or internal control for the switching of the output transistors. All logic control inputs have built-in noise filtering.

A significant feature claimed of the PW-82351 is a ground isolation barrier which separates the power and control stages. This attenuates ground noise generated from high-speed,high-power switching and allows the PW-82351 to operate from unipolar or bipolar power supplies. The barrier maintains electrical isolation between the control-side ground and power-side return. The power section is completely floating from the control section.

The drive also claims a capability in which the motor current is sensed internally and measured in the output of the PW-82351. It is available as an isolated composite current composed of all three phases, or as an individual phase current signal. The current signal can be used as a feedback signal in a servo drive to create a torque loop for trapezoidal or sinusoidal drive.

The output stage of the PW-82351 is protected from both short-circuit and regenerative bus pump-up conditions. If a short circuit is detected, the output transistor is shut down and an active BIT flag is set indicating the short has occurred. If a regenerative bus pump-up condition is detected, the regenerative bus pump-up switch is enabled and an external load is applied to the high-voltage bus. This also sets a flag.

If an active BIT is detected, the flag indicating the regenerative bus pump-up condition will occur. A disable/enable control feature then allows the user to shut down the drive stage to guard against an un-commanded motion condition.

The PW-82351 measures 108mm × 73.7mm and has a profile height of only 22.9mm. It operates from±1,815 volt and +5 Vdc dc power supplies.
