BUBL Link Engineering and Technology

Keywords: Aerospace, Internet

An excellent site with links to useful Internet resources in the aerospace and other engineering fields is BUBL Link Engineering and Technology which can be found at http://bubl.ac.uk/link/eng.htmlThe BUBL Information Service http://bubl.ac.uk/is funded by the JISC which in turn is funded by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council, the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and the Department of Education Northern Ireland. The mission of the JISC is "To stimulate and enable the cost effective exploitation of information systems and to provide a high quality national network infrastructure for the UK higher education and research councils communities". From here you can enter BUBL Link and select your interest area, for example, Engineering and Technology. I then clicked on Aeronautics which provided a list of links to relevant sites. The first one I tried was ASO.

If you need to buy or sell an aircraft, try a visit to Aircraft Shopper Online (ASO), http://aso.solid.com/ASOclaims that, "The best place on earth to find a plane is the best place on earth to sell yours!". The site is quick to load and the navigation pointers are clear. It provides information about how to advertise your "for sale" item, testimonials from previous users of the site, a list of brokers and, of course,a list of aircraft for sale (see Figure 2). Because the information is online the interested buyer can search the site to find what they are looking for. The search can be limited by Type of aircraft, Make and Model, Price range, Model year and Total time airframe. The majority of the aircraft for sale seem to be located in the USA, but there are some for sale worldwide. Once a suitable craft has been identified, the vendor can be contacted via e-mail at the click of a button.

Also from the BUBL Link site, I was able to visit the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics http://www.aiaa.org/.This was a little slow to load but not unbearably so. The AIAA homepage provides details about the aims, structure and contact information of the Association plus links to details of conferences, publications a news bulletin, an alerting service, membership information, future activities plus more aerospace links! This site is also searchable using key terms.

The final site I visited from the BUBL Link was an interesting looking educational resource called ALLSTAR (Figure 3), Aeronautics Learning Laboratory for Science and Technology Research part funded by NASA http://www.allstar.fiu.edu/. The site contains teaching resources covering the History of Aeronautics, Aerospace Education and Careers and the Principles of Aeronautics. Each is split into categories for middle/junior high school students, junior high/high school students and high school/lower division college students. The site is clear and easy to navigate and boasts a very impressive collection of awards ranging from recognition for quality of content from BBC Education to the National Academy Press Coolest Site Award.
